Hank called me at 11 p.m. on a Thursday. Wind was tearing through his street. Power had been out for four hours.

I asked if he needed anything.

He laughed. “I’m watching the game,” he said. “Fridge is running. Phone’s charging. I got a box.”

I figured he meant a generator — the gas kind, loud and smelly, the kind that sits in the garage until you need it. But that’s not what he had.

He had a portable power station. Paid about $500 for it. It’s the size of a small cooler — no gas, no exhaust. He plugged in his fridge, his phone, a lamp, and his CPAP machine. Ran all of it for over twelve hours.

When I drove over the next morning, his neighbors were hauling bags of ice from the gas station. Hank was making coffee.

I didn’t take him seriously until I looked it up.

01. WHY I CHANGED MY MIND ABOUT THESE THINGS

I used to think power stations were toys — something for tailgates, or for guys who camp in $90,000 trucks.

Then I saw the numbers.

According to J.D. Power, the average American’s longest outage jumped from about 8 hours in 2022 to nearly 13 hours by mid-2025. Almost half the country lost power in the first six months of that year alone. Down South, the average worst outage stretched past 18 hours.

The grid isn’t getting better. Storms are bigger. Infrastructure is older. And the guy who fixes the transformer on your block is the same guy fixing the one three towns over.

That’s not a sales pitch. That’s the U.S. Energy Information Administration and J.D. Power saying the same thing from different angles. So I started paying attention to what Hank bought.

02. WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT ISN’T

A portable power station is a big rechargeable battery with outlets on the front. You plug things into it the same way you’d plug into a wall.

That’s it.

No engine, no gas, no exhaust. You can run it inside your house — next to your bed, in the kitchen, wherever you want. It’s quiet enough that you’ll forget it’s on.

The good ones use a battery type called LiFePO4 — lithium iron phosphate. The short version: it’s the safest, most stable battery chemistry you can buy. It won’t overheat or catch fire. And most are rated for 3,000 or more full charge cycles before they even start to lose capacity.

That’s roughly ten years of daily use.

A gas generator gives you more raw power. But it can kill you if you run it inside. A power station won’t.

03. THE ONLY NUMBER THAT MATTERS

Forget watts for a second. The number you actually care about is watt-hours. That’s the one that tells you how long the thing runs before it’s empty.

Think of it like a gas tank on a truck. Watts tells you how big the engine is. Watt-hours tells you how many gallons the tank holds.

A standard kitchen fridge runs its compressor part of the time and idles the rest. On average, it pulls about 50 to 80 watts per hour across a full day. A 1,000-watt-hour station will keep that fridge cold for roughly 10 to 15 hours after you account for system losses. A 2,000-watt-hour station doubles that.

Your phone takes about 5 watt-hours per charge. A CPAP machine draws around 30 to 60 watts per hour depending on settings. A couple of LED lamps? Maybe 10 watts each.

You don’t need to power your whole house. You need to keep the essentials running until the lights come back. A 1,000-watt-hour unit handles that for most outages.

04. THREE UNITS WORTH YOUR MONEY

I looked at about a dozen of these. Talked to Hank. Read the testing. Here are the three I’d put my own money on.

EcoFlow Delta 3 Plus — $599. 1,024 watt-hours. Charges from dead to full in under an hour from a wall outlet. Puts out 1,800 watts — enough to run a fridge and a CPAP at the same time. You can add extra batteries later and expand it up to 5,000 watt-hours. Rated for 3,000-plus cycles. This is the one you buy if you want a system that grows.
Anker Solix C1000 Gen 2 — $499. Also 1,024 watt-hours. Charges in 49 minutes — Guinness certified it as the fastest in its class. Outputs 2,000 watts. Weighs about 25 pounds. Has a UPS mode that switches to battery in under 10 milliseconds, so your CPAP never skips a breath. Rated for 4,000 cycles. The catch: you can’t expand it. What you buy is what you get.
Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 — $799. Double the tank. 2,042 watt-hours. Enough to run a fridge for a full day and still charge your phone a dozen times. Outputs 2,200 watts. Charges in under two hours from a wall outlet. Weighs about 40 pounds — heavier, but still liftable. Also not expandable. This is the one you buy if you want more runway and don’t plan to add batteries later.

05. WHAT I’D ACTUALLY BUY

For most guys, the Anker at $499 is the right call. It’s the lightest of the three and it charges the fastest. It also puts out more watts than the EcoFlow for a hundred dollars less.

The trade-off is that you can’t expand it. If you think you might want a bigger system down the road, the EcoFlow is worth the extra hundred bucks because it takes add-on batteries. The Anker doesn’t offer that.

If your power goes out a lot, or you’re in a storm zone, go bigger. The Jackery at $799 gives you twice the capacity. That’s a full day of fridge time on one charge.

06. TWO MISTAKES I’D SKIP

First: don’t buy too small. Those $100 to $200 units hold about 250 watt-hours. That’ll charge your phone a bunch of times, but it won’t run a fridge for more than a couple of hours. If you’re buying this for backup, start at 1,000 watt-hours.

Second: charge it before storm season. These things hold a charge for months, but “months” isn’t “forever.” Plug it in once in the spring and once in the fall. Takes an hour, then put it back in the closet.

Buy one. Charge it. Put it in the closet. Forget about it until you need it. That’s the whole strategy.

Hank told me he charges his on the first of every month. He plugs it in, makes a cup of coffee, and unplugs it before he finishes. That’s how simple this is.

Hank’s power came back after about 16 hours. He barely noticed when it switched over. The box was back in the closet the next day, fully charged and waiting for the next one.

That’s the whole point. You buy it once, charge it once, and put it away. And when the block goes dark, you sleep fine.
