A guy ran a red light and hit me in a parking lot last March. Side impact. Crunched my rear quarter panel. Both of us pulled over. He got out of his car and told me I’d backed into him.
I hadn’t backed into him. I was sitting still. He blew through the stop sign.
The cop showed up. Took both statements. It was his word against mine. No witnesses. No traffic cameras. Just two guys pointing fingers on a Tuesday afternoon.
Then I remembered the little black box behind my mirror.
I pulled the memory card. Played the video on my phone. The footage showed the whole thing. His car, the red light, the impact, the time stamp. The cop watched it twice. Wrote the report. My insurance company settled the claim in 48 hours.
That camera cost me $99. The body work on my truck would’ve cost me my deductible plus a rate increase if I couldn’t prove what happened.

01. WHY EVERY TRUCK NEEDS ONE
A dash cam is the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy. It doesn’t lower your premium. It does something better. It proves what happened.
Every year, thousands of claims come down to one driver’s word against another’s. No witnesses. No footage. The insurance company splits the blame, raises both rates, and moves on.
A dash cam ends the argument before it starts. The footage is the truth. It doesn’t forget. It doesn’t get nervous. It doesn’t change its story.
“The best $99 I’ve ever spent is a camera I forget is there until I need it.”
02. THE THREE I’D BUY
1
Viofo A119 Mini 2. Around $80 to $100. This is the one I use. Tiny. Hides behind the mirror. Records in 2K with a Sony sensor that sees well at night. Uses a supercapacitor instead of a battery, so it won’t swell or fail in summer heat. No screen. You check footage on your phone. Best camera under $100 by a wide margin.
2
Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2. Around $100 to $130. The simplest setup. Garmin’s app is clean. The camera is the size of a car key. Plug it in, aim it, forget it. The footage is 1080p with HDR. Not as sharp as the Viofo, but sharp enough to read a plate and prove a point.
3
Viofo A229 Pro. Around $200 to $250. Front and rear coverage. Two cameras, both with Sony sensors. The front records in 4K. The rear records in 2K. It catches everything in front of you and behind you. Twice the price but twice the protection.
03. HOW TO SET IT UP
▸ Mount it behind the mirror. Most dash cams come with a small mount that tucks right behind the rearview. Once it’s up there, you’ll forget it exists.
▸ Run the cable along the headliner. Tuck the power cable into the gap between the headliner and the windshield. Down the A-pillar. Into the lighter or a USB port. Ten minutes. No dangling wires.
▸ Buy a good memory card. Get a high-endurance card made for dash cams. Samsung and SanDisk both make them. A 128 GB card costs about $20 and holds hours of footage.
04. A QUESTION I GET ASKED
Q. Doesn’t it record over itself?
A. Yes. That’s how it works. It records in a loop. When the card fills up, it writes over the oldest footage. But when the camera detects a sudden impact, it locks that file so it can’t be overwritten. The moment you need is always saved.
05. WHAT I ALMOST LOST
Without that footage, the accident in March would’ve been a coin flip. His story sounded just as true as mine. The cop had no way to know who was right.
I would’ve been stuck paying my deductible. My rate would’ve gone up. His insurance company would’ve said it was 50/50 and walked away.
That little black box behind my mirror paid for itself in one afternoon. It’s been running every day since. Quiet. Steady. Watching the road when I’m not.
Buy a dash cam. Mount it. Forget it. The one time you need it, you’ll be glad it was there.
